MODULE 1

Diploma in Pilates

1.The History of Pilates

In this lesson, we explore the inspiring history of Joseph Pilates. We start by understanding why Joseph decided to create his own exercise method to how the Pilates method evolved over time. We learn about breathing which is one of the Pilates principle. We explore the reason as to why this breathing method is preferred and the benefits. Lastly we gain the skills and knowledge to perform Pilates breathing.

2.The Core

In this lesson, we discover the 6 Pilates principles. We understand the importance of each Pilates principle by discovering the purpose of each principle. Each principle relates to a Pilates exercise of an area of Pilates, in the lesson you will discover how we can practically apply all principles to our sessions.

3.Natural spine and pelvis

In this lesson, we discover the neutral spine and the neutral pelvis. When we are in the neural pelvis it does not automatically mean that we are in a neutral spine too. We explore the differences and similarities between the two and we gain practical skills and knowledge to apply neutral pelvis and spine to our Pilates practice.

4.Core Strength

In this lesson, we discuss what muscles form a part of 'the core' which are known as the powerhouse in Pilates. We explore the different muscles and learn how to test our core strength. The sky's the limit when it comes to core strength, we can always improve. Once we have tested the core strength we discover exercises which we use to strengthen the core.

5.Fundamental Core Exercises

The lesson is dedicated to learning new core exercises. We will learn the benefits of the exercises, how to perform them effectively, and how to modify them to different individuals' needs.

6.The Hip Joint

Pilates has many different benefits, one being a safe and effective way for individuals with joint injuries or problems are still able to strengthen their muscles through Pilates. In this lesson, we learn about the structure of the hip joint as well as how to practically apply our anatomical knowledge through exploring a few Pilates exercises to aid in the rehabilitation of the hip joint.

7.Spinal Articulation Exercises

This lesson is dedicated to spinal articulation exercises. Spinal articulation is the ability to move the vertebra in segments, or piece by piece. Spine strength and control are very important in Pilates and therefore we take the time in this lesson to learn the benefits of each exercise, how to perform it, and how was can tailor it to an individual's needs.

8.Safe Exercising

When we are exercising we want to make sure that we reduce the risk of injury to the best of our ability. In this lesson, we learn all about what safe exercising entails and how we can practically apply safe exercise principles and methods to our Pilates sessions.

1.Anatomy 101

There are many different muscle discussed in the first module. In this lesson we cover the rest of the basic anatomical structures we need to know to perform and demonstrate Pilates exercises to the best of our ability.

2.Anatomical Terminology

When we move, we move through different planes and ranges of motion. We need to have a clear understanding of how the human body can move to move efficiently.

3.Fundamental Upper Body Exercises

The magic of discovering new Pilates exercises continues as we look deeper into Pilates exercises specific to the upper body.

4.The Shoulder Joint

Pilates has many different benefits, one being a safe and effective way for individuals with joint injuries or problems are still able to strengthen their muscles through Pilates. In this lesson, we learn about the structure of the shoulder joint. 5.Fundamental Lower Body Exercises

In a previous module we spoke about how we could use different Pilates exercises we could use to asses posture. In this lesson we look at the specific exercises and how they are used to asses posture.

8.Back Pain

Pilates has proven to be effective for aiding in different illnesses and diseases. In this lesson we learn how Pilates can be useful to treat and relieve the symptoms and effect of disease and illnesses.

1.Balance and Imbalance

In Pilates we aim to ensure the correct posture and symmetry of the body. In this lesson we discover the causes of different imbalances in the body and how we can use Pilates to create symmetry in the body.

2.Full Body Integration Exercises

So far we have discovered many different exercises. In this lesson we take our Pilates exercise to the next level. Full body integration exercises involve a variety of muscles. Using many different muscles at the same time increases the intensity of the exercises.

3.The Ankle and Foot Complex

Pilates has many different benefits, one being a safe and effective way for individuals with joint injuries or problems are still able to strengthen their muscles through Pilates. In this lesson, we learn about the structure of the ankle joint. We learn how to practically apply our anatomical knowledge through exploring a few Pilates exercises to aid in the rehabilitation of the ankle joint.

4.Stretches

Pilates incorporates different intense exercises. During the Pilates session a few stretching exercises are used to bring the heart rate back down using different stretching or recovery exercises. In this lesson we discover the different exercise used to stretch different areas of the body.

5.First Impressions & Building Rapport

Making a good first impression may more challenging than what we expect. In this lesson explore a few tips to making a good first impression as well as how to maintain a good impression and client relationship.

6.Exercise Prescription

Everybody has different goals and reasons why they are exercising. We can construct different Pilates sessions according to individual needs. In this lesson we will explore different ways of conducting Pilates sessions to achieve different results.

7.Props and Aids- Part 1

There are many different props which can be used to make exercises easier or harder. In this lesson we learn what progressions and regressions are and how we can use different props to achieve the desired effect.

8.Props and Aids- Part 2 and Special Populations

There is never a one size fits all approach when it comes to instructing or performing a Pilates session. In this lesson we will discover a few more props we can use to incorporate into our Pilates sessions and see how we can adapt a session to suit the needs of an individual who may need additional assistance.

1.Imagery and Cueing

Using imagery and cueing is a vital part of conducting and performing a Pilates session. In this lesson we discover ways we can open our imaginations to creating our own cues and images.

2.Progressions and regressions

The same way we are able to use props, we can adapt a variety of exercises according to the needs of the participant. Without using specified exercises in this lesson we gain the skills and knowledge to adapt an exercise without having the prescribed modifications.

3.Exercise principles

A Pilates programme will be created to best suit the goals of the participant. Understanding and applying different exercise principles to these programmes will aid in achieving the individuals goals.

4.Pilates for Children

Pilates is not only beneficial for adults. In this lesson we learn about the benefits of Pilates for children and how they can adapt a Pilates session to make it enjoyable and beneficial for children

5.Pilates for Golf

In this lesson we discover which muscles are used for golf as well as other components to increase the golf swing. We will use the skills and knowledge we currently have to create a Pilates session specific for golfers.

6.Advanced Exercises

In this lesson we will discover the final advanced exercises for Pilates Mat

7.Introduction to Pilates Equipment

In this course we discovered a few pieces of Pilates equipment that Joe created. In this lesson we will look at how Pilates can develop even further into the world of Pilates equipment

8.Tying it all together

Now that we have all the skills and knowledge we need to apply it. In this module we have looked at a few different scenarios, therefore in this lesson we take it to the final step by assessing a session and a programme too.
